We opened this branch in 1984, the same spring we watched a locksmith van pull away from a brownstone in Brooklyn Heights leaving a widow on her stoop with a bill three times the phone quote and a lock that still stuck. We’d been working the trade in another city under the Strongbox name already, but that morning we knew New York needed something different. The locksmith trade here was running on bait-and-switch arithmetic: a low voice on the phone, a high number at the door, and a customer too embarrassed or too late at night to argue.
