Without the current key, SmartKey cylinders must be drilled out and replaced, not rekeyed.
To identify your cylinder, check the keyway face. Traditional Kwikset has a rounded “KW1” or “KW10” stamp. - Key turns 360 degrees without retracting the latch. The tailpiece has separated from the cylinder plug, usually from forced turning or a previous amateur rekey where the C-clip was not seated.
- Different keys operate the same lock. Severely worn pin chambers have lost tolerance, creating accidental master-keying. This happens most in pre-war buildings where the same lock has been rekeyed six or more times.
- SmartKey cylinder will not accept the reset tool. The sidebar wafers have jammed from debris or prior forced rotation. This cylinder is done; it needs replacement, not rekeying.
- Key works in warm weather but not cold. Brass pins contract differently than steel springs. In unheated entryways common in Jackson Heights and Ridgewood, we see this seasonally when temperatures drop below 20 degrees.
