Meet the New York Team Behind Strongbox Lock & Safe Co. of New York
Our New York crew is a small, steady group of locksmiths who’ve chosen to stay in a trade that rewards patience over speed. What unites us isn’t a mission statement on a wall. It’s the shared understanding that we’re walking into someone’s home or business at a vulnerable moment, and the way we handle that walk defines everything. Background-checked, uniformed, ID at the door, every time. That’s the baseline. The rest is craft.
Our People
Vincent Calabrese, Owner
I’ve been at this since the early 1980s, when my father handed me a pinning kit and told me to stop talking and start listening to how a cylinder feels when it’s right. I started Strongbox Lock & Safe Co. of New York because I got tired of watching this trade drift toward bait-and-switch pricing and fly-by-night operators. The name comes from the iron box where my grandfather kept the deed to his Queens row house - solid, unflashy, meant to last. I still take calls myself when the line backs up, and I keep a set of picks in my truck because paperwork doesn’t teach you what a frozen Medeco feels like at 2 a.m. in a January nor’easter. My dry humor has been described as “present,” which is fair enough.
Marcus T., Lead Technician
Marcus joined us fourteen years ago after eight years running his own small shop in the Bronx, which he closed when his second daughter arrived and the solo life stopped making sense. He’s our go-to for high-security installations - Medeco, Mul-T-Lock, Abloy - and he’s the one Vincent calls when a job goes sideways and nobody can figure out why the pins won’t seat. Marcus holds a GSA certification for safe and vault work, which matters more than you’d think in a city with this many pre-war buildings and their original floor safes. He collects vintage subway maps and will absolutely tell you which train line used to run under your street if you ask, and sometimes if you don’t.
Elena R., Senior Installer
Elena came to us from a commercial hardware supplier in Long Island City, where she spent a decade specifying door hardware for schools, hospitals, and high-rise renovations before deciding she’d rather install what she specified than argue about lead times. She’s our commercial lead, handling everything from Sargent exit device retrofits in Midtown office buildings to full access-control overhauls in Brooklyn co-ops. Her specialty is ADA compliance - she can walk a building and tell you exactly which doors need hardware adjustments before the inspector does. She runs a small urban garden on her fire escape in Astoria and brings in tomatoes in August that make the rest of us feel inadequate.
James K., Service Coordinator
James is the voice you hear when you call, and the reason we can say a live person answers 24/7 without lying. He’s been with us eleven years, starting as a dispatcher while he finished his degree in criminal justice at John Jay, which he chose because he wanted to understand the other side of what we do - how locks fail, how buildings get breached, how people think about security when they’re not in a panic. He schedules the New York metro calls, quotes flat prices over the phone, and has a near-photographic memory for which technician has which parts on their truck. He plays in a jazz quartet in Washington Heights on Thursday nights, and the patience he learned from Coltrane records serves him well when three emergencies hit at once.
Darnell W., Apprentice
Darnell is two years into his apprenticeship, which in New York means he’s logged roughly 1,800 hours of supervised field work and can now rekey a Kwikset in his sleep but still hands off Mul-T-Lock cylinders to Marcus for review. He came to us through a workforce development program in Harlem after leaving a retail management job that paid better but meant less. He’s our fastest learner in years - Vincent says he has “good hands,” which is about as effusive as Vincent gets. Darnell specializes in automotive lockouts and key programming, the one corner of the trade that’s changing fastest. He lives with his grandmother in Flatbush and checks in by text after every late call so she doesn’t worry.
One Standard, Every Job
The 90-Day Done Right Promise isn’t a department. It’s the agreement we make with each other before we make it with you. Every technician carries the same written guarantee, the same flat-price commitment, the same requirement to show ID and explain the work before touching a screw. We don’t subcontract. We don’t send someone whose background we haven’t checked. The price quoted on the phone is the price on the invoice - no exceptions, no “while I’m here” upsells. If it’s not right, we come back. No paperwork, no arguing. We’ve been doing it this way for over 42 years, and the only thing that’s changed is the locks have gotten more complicated, which just means we have to know our business better. Done right - and backed in writing. That’s the deal.
