Which Kwikset Models This Applies To

Kwikset master key systems break down into two families, and knowing which one you have saves a trip. The traditional pin-tumbler line covers Kwikset UltraMax, Titan, and the commercial-grade 660/780/980 series deadbolts and knobs. These use standard .115″ diameter bottom pins and require a factory-original keying kit or a locksmith with the proper pinning chart to build the hierarchy correctly. The newer SmartKey family, including the 980S, 985S, and the Signature Series, uses a sidebar wafer system that looks similar from the outside but keys entirely differently. SmartKey cylinders can be master-keyed, but only with Kwikset’s specific SmartKey master key components, not traditional pins.

To identify what you have, remove the key and look at the face of the cylinder. A small slot next to the keyway means SmartKey. No slot means traditional pin-tumbler. The model number is also stamped on the latch or bolt edge of the door. We carry both OEM Kwikset master key kits and Lab and HPC aftermarket equivalents that meet the same tolerances. Signs Your Kwikset Master Key Systems Is Failing

• The master key works in some locks but not others. This usually means a master pin has sheared or shifted in one cylinder, breaking the mathematical relationship between the change key and master key bittings. In pre-war New York buildings with original Kwikset hardware, we see this after decades of key duplication wearing the tolerances loose.
• Tenant keys start opening neighboring units. When master wafers or pins wear down, the bitting overlap between change keys grows until keys intended for one lock operate others in the same hierarchy. This is a security failure, not just a convenience problem.
• Keys stick at certain depths or require jiggling. Debris mixed with worn master pins creates false gates in the pin chambers. New York’s older steam-heat buildings put out fine rust particles that accelerate this.
• The key turns but the latch or deadbolt does not retract. The master key system itself may be fine while the tailpiece, cam, or latch mechanism has failed. We check both before quoting, because replacing cylinders on a broken latch wastes your money.
• You have added a new lock and cannot get it into the existing master key system. Kwikset master keying requires specific pinning depths. A lock bought off the shelf at a New York hardware store will not drop into your hierarchy without re-pinning to your system’s code.

You can verify your keyway type, count your cylinders, and test whether the problem follows the key or the lock by trying the suspect key in multiple doors. What you should not do is remove a cylinder and attempt to re-pin it yourself. Kwikset master keying requires a pinning kit with precise depth increments, a key gauge, and the mathematical chart that defines which pin stacks create non-interfering bittings. Get one master pin length wrong and two keys open the same lock, or the master key stops working entirely.
