The Obsidian and discontinued Kevo used entirely different chassis designs; we stock adapters for Kevo retrofits but Obsidian parts are factory-only.
Identification is straightforward: remove the interior cover and photograph the white label. The FCC ID (usually starting with SKS or KWI) and the four-digit date code tell us exactly which mounting kit to bring. We carry both OEM Kwikset boxes and qualifying Grade 2 aftermarket equivalents for SmartCode 914/916 units - the aftermarket saves roughly $40 and carries the same 90-Day Done Right Promise. Signs Your Kwikset Smart Lock Installation Is Failing
- The lock beeps and flashes green but the bolt does not extend. This is the classic stripped cam on SmartCode 910-916 units. The motor runs, the clutch slips, and the bolt stays put. Left unattended, the motor burns out and the repair doubles in price.
- Keypad or app responds only in warm weather. We see this constantly in unheated Brooklyn vestibules and Queens garage entries. Alkaline batteries lose 40% capacity below 40°F; the voltage sag confuses the board. Lithium AAs solve it, but if the board has already suffered brownout damage, replacement is the fix.
- The deadbolt drags or sticks mid-throw. Usually frame shift from seasonal humidity in older New York wood frames, not the lock itself. The smart lock’s motor has less torque than a human hand, so what worked manually fails electronically. We plane the strike or shim the hinges before blaming the hardware.
- “Jammed” alerts with no visible obstruction. The internal position sensor - a Hall-effect switch on SmartCode, optical on Halo - loses calibration. It can sometimes be reset with a 30-second battery pull, but recurring alerts mean the sensor board is failing.
- Interior cover loose or hanging. The plastic mounting posts crack from overtightening or thermal cycling. Kwikset redesigned these in 2019; older posts are a 22mm spacing, newer are 24mm. We measure before ordering.

There is one thing every Kwikset owner should check before calling: battery type and voltage. Swap in fresh lithium AAs, not alkalines, and see if the symptoms clear. Also verify the door locks smoothly with the key - if it drags manually, no smart motor will fix it.
Where DIY goes wrong: the mounting screws. Kwikset includes #8 × 1″ screws for standard 1-3/4″ doors. New York’s older 1-3/8″ doors need the shorter screws in the alternate bag; use the long ones and you will punch through the face or split the stile. Worse, overtorquing the interior cover cracks the posts - a $12 part that requires full disassembly to replace.
