Mul-T-Lock Smart Lock Installation: The New York Owner’s Guide
Mul-T-Lock smart lock installation in New York typically runs $380-$720 depending on the model series and whether your door needs additional prep work. We stock the full Mul-T-Lock MT5+ and Interactive+ smart lock lines on our trucks, and most residential installations in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens are completed same day. The most common call we get is from an owner whose key turns but the deadbolt won’t throw, or the smart module stopped responding after a New York winter.
Which Mul-T-Lock Models This Applies To
Mul-T-Lock produces several smart lock platforms, and matching the right hardware to your existing cylinder is where most jobs go sideways. We install and service the ENTR smart lock system, the Code-It keypad series, and the newer MT5+ Connect line. The ENTR unit fits any Mul-T-Lock Interactive+, MT5+, or Classic keyway cylinder with a standard 1-3/8″ to 2″ backset, which covers the vast majority of New York apartment doors from the 1960s forward.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha we see weekly: the ENTR requires a minimum 55mm door thickness. Pre-war doors in parts of Brooklyn and the Upper West Side often measure 45-50mm, which means either a door build-up or stepping down to the Code-It lever set. We carry both solutions on the truck.
We source OEM Mul-T-Lock smart modules and mounting hardware. Aftermarket Bluetooth boards exist, but we’ve seen three fail within eighteen months in New York’s humidity swings. For a lock you touch ten times a day, we install what the factory built.
Signs Your Mul-T-Lock Smart Lock Installation Is Failing
- The key works but the motor won’t throw the bolt. This usually means the ENTR’s clutch gear has stripped. The motor draws power, you hear it whir, but the deadbolt stays put. In New York, we see this most often on doors that stick seasonally; owners force the turn, and the plastic clutch takes the abuse.
- App shows “connected” but the lock doesn’t respond. The Bluetooth module is likely failing. Heat buildup behind a south-facing door in a Queens rowhouse can push the internal board past its tolerance, especially in July and August.
- Battery drains in under two weeks. A binding deadbolt forces the motor to draw excess current. Before blaming the batteries, check if the bolt throws smoothly by hand. If it catches at the strike plate, the door has settled or the frame has swollen.
- Keypad buttons stick or don’t register. On Code-It units, moisture intrusion through the button membrane is the culprit. We see this after wet seasons in New York, particularly on doors without a proper overhead drip edge.
- The lock beeps three times and stops. This is the ENTR’s error code for a misaligned mounting plate. The anti-drill plate has shifted, often because the original installer used the included screws instead of threading the door properly for New York’s heavier steel-frame doors.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
For a full Mul-T-Lock smart lock installation in New York, expect:
- ENTR unit with cylinder: $380-$520
- Code-It lever set: $340-$480
- Door prep or strike adjustment: $60-$140
- Additional smart module or bridge: $90-$150
The range depends on your existing Mul-T-Lock cylinder type and whether we can reuse it. MT5+ cylinders in good condition transfer over; worn Interactive+ cylinders should be replaced while we’re there. Every installation includes programming up to ten user credentials, app pairing, and a written 90-Day Done Right Promise. Flat price before the truck rolls - that is the only way we know how to do it.
Seniors and veterans receive a standing 5% discount on the installed price.
DIY or Call Us?
There’s a safe middle ground here. You can check your door thickness with a ruler, confirm your cylinder series from the key head marking, and verify the backset by measuring from the door edge to the center of the existing bore. That information gets us 80% of the way to a firm quote over the phone.
What we don’t recommend: drilling new mounting holes, routing cable channels, or attempting to transfer a high-security cylinder yourself. Mul-T-Lock cylinders contain sidebar pins that drop into place if the key isn’t held correctly during removal. Once those pins scatter, the cylinder is junk. We’ve had New York homeowners bring us cylinders in a sandwich bag. Call us first. We carry the right fixtures, the right bits, and we know which pre-war doors in New York have steel plates hiding behind the first eighth-inch of wood.
FAQs
Five to seven years for the ENTR motor assembly, longer for the mechanical cylinder. New York’s temperature swings and summer humidity are harder on the electronics than the metal. We see the first Bluetooth module issues around year four in buildings without hallway climate control. Call (833) 317-5852 if yours is approaching that age - we can test the board before it fails.
Sometimes. A stripped clutch gear or failed battery contact is repairable if we have the parts. A dead Bluetooth board or cracked housing means replacement. We stock both repair components and full units, so we’ll tell you honestly which path costs less. Our 90-Day Done Right Promise covers either route. Call (833) 317-5852 and we’ll walk through the symptoms.
Most residential Mul-T-Lock smart lock installations in New York take 45 to 90 minutes. A straightforward cylinder swap on a standard door is closer to 45 minutes. Door prep, strike relocation, or programming multiple family members’ phones adds time. We schedule two-hour windows and finish within them.
Yes. We carry ENTR and Code-It units in satin nickel and oil-rubbed bronze, plus the full range of Mul-T-Lock cylinders. For less common finishes or the MT5+ Connect with WiFi bridge, we can have it next business day. Call (833) 317-5852 with your address and we’ll confirm what’s on the nearest truck.
